“This long-house needs human blood. The foundation pillar cannot be erected without the sacrifice,” said Chief Kanyau, referring to the ‘ngayau’ ritual. “But this task of obtaining humans for the sacrifice is going to be very difficult,” exclaimed his assistant, Tuai Rumah Janting. “Our warriors are still not trained for battle.” Ngayau, inspired by an ancient ritual in the Sarawak jungles, chronicles the struggles of a small community with gruesome traditions and norms, such as headhunting. Ngayau is a gripping tale full of awe and suspense, joy and horror.
