This volume is a sequel to Muafakat Bahasa: Sejarah MBIM dan MABBIM Sebagai Pembina Bahasa (DBP 2004), and Carik-Carik Bulu Ayam: Kisah Runding Bahasa Dunia Melayu (DBP 2009). While the first focuses on the history of the Language Council of Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia (BIM), the second is more directed towards the negotiations that took place, and this means conflict and conflict handling.
In this book, Crossing the Malay Linguistic Divide, the focus is on the stance and expediency of the "players" which have ensured the longevity of the Council. In its title the word linguistic rather than language is used, because it is not the Malay language that forms the divide but rather the linguistic aspects and intricacies of language usage in a member country which may not exist in or be acceptable by the counterparts. To the BIM this undertaking is important in maintaining their geolinguistic and geocultural identity.
